I found a new workmate today: corbusier, a pseudonymous contributor to a blog entitled architecture and morality. If I hadn't Googled the blog's title for an image to accompany this post, I wouldn't have known that it's probably inspired by the album of the same name by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
It's a blog with choice thoughts on many topics: consumerism, the recent riots in France, anti-semitism, and--of course--architecture.
I've tried my hand at that here, but I'm unsteady and I color outside the lines too much.
Best to go to architecture and morality for that from now on.
What struck me was his current home: Rockwall, Texas.
This was a suburban outpost when I was growing up in Dallas. It may still be, but there is the usual flurry of construction and development on the banks of scenic Lake Ray Hubbard. It boasts a typical downtown square with an nondescript late-Deco to early-Moderne courthouse, built in 1940, and not the best example of either style from what I can see.
Wonder what became of the old one? It was likely made of exquisite limestone. Or maybe not.
I wonder what it is like to be a Franco-American architect living in Rockwall, Texas?

I'm extremely flattered by your post! Finally, someone figured out the inspiration for the title of my blog...I am an OMD fan and I like a lot of their synth-pop contemporaries as well. It was the group's best album, and they were very skillful in incorporating early modernist and bauhaus design on their album covers. For me "Architecture and Morality" has such a comprehensive and lyrical feel to it.
Although I live in Rockwall, I work in downtown Dallas at a multi-national firm. You seem to be very familiar with the town. The courthouse was recently renovated and looks quite beautiful. I think some county functions take place there.
The town is experiencing massive growth (pop. 25,000) and was the fastest growing county in the state a couple of years ago. All the major big-box retail has made its way there, and some high end-development, including a new Hilton hotel is on its way. Lake Ray Hubbard is a few hundred yards from our house.
Being Franco-American in Rockwall is like being Franco-American anywhere else: you kind of keep it yourself. Rockwallians are a bit provincial, even if they can be proud of their great schools and low crim-rate. I maintain relations with my French relatives, and I listen to French radio and music. Still, Rockwall could benefit a lot from a few intellectual salons.
