Poetry Thursday: "how to love this world"
Springby Mary Oliver
Somewhere
a black bear
has just risen from sleep
and is staring
down the mountain.
All night
in the brisk and shallow restlessness
of early spring
I think of her,
her four black fists
flicking the gravel,
her tongue
like a red fire
touching the grass,
the cold water.
There is only one question:
how to love this world.
I think of her
rising
like a black and leafy ledge
to sharpen her claws against
the silence
of the trees.
Whatever else
my life is
with its poems
and its music
and its cities,
it is also this dazzling darkness
coming
down the mountain,
breathing and tasting;
all day I think of her -—
her white teeth,
her wordlessness,
her perfect love.

thank you for this poem. i haven't read much of mary oliver, but at this point, i'm regretting that. "sharpens her claws/against the silence of trees" is such a wonderful line.
welcome, bee. btw, i have a special affinity for those little creatures, just ask my husband. i have wanted for many years to become an urban beekeeper. it is still on my wishlist. come back!
ps: i have a wonderful word verification this time: jotyaz!
Thanks for this. Can never get enough Mary Oliver.

What wonderful language she uses. I saw her read once in Kansas City. She was amazing.
wonderful selection. oliver is fabulous and always a joy to read.
this reminds me of my daily garden walks, my noticing paw prints and deer hooves in our garden, and more recently the "fat" prints - wondering if it is a bear!
Your a great writer and i'll return to your blog for more reading. thank you for sharing.
