Poetry Thursday

Hope

Kay Ryan

What's the use
of something
as unstable
and diffuse as hope -
the almost-twin
of making-do,
the isotope
of going on:
what isn't in
the envelope
just before
it isn't:
the always tabled
righting of the present.

I'll be chewing this one over a couple of times before it truly sits, but really: how great is the line: "what isn't in the envelope just before it isn't"? (answer:Very!)

One of my favorites. I used it in my Katrina Poetry blog: http://everythingandnothing.typepad.com/katrinapoetry/2005/11/hope.html

Jeez, and people say some of the poetry I post is depressing.

(w.v.: heymf. Doesn't anyone screen this stuff?)
